Why is Erasmus' position as a natural scientist in question?

He has a good reputation before the events of this novel, even though he had already told some lies. His lies, however, have been exposed. For example, he planted a fossil on a beach and then arranged for seven-year-old Faith to "find" it, creating more interest around the discovery than if he had simply recovered it himself.
