An example of imagery appears in Chapter 16 when Faith is rowing out to the sea cave alone for the first time. She struggles to reach the cave and when she gets there, the cave's “open mouth swallowed each wave, then vomited foam” (166). The imagery there is meant to convey the idea that the cave is a living being, and the personification includes that the cave mouth swallows and vomits. Inside, Faith goes on to talk about the atmosphere in the cave and that the echoes sound like a human breath.
