What was the truth behind Tex and Belinda, as Charlie told the story?

As Charlie told Mary the story, she was married off at the age of 15 because her mother wanted her out of the house. Soon after, Charlie gave birth to two children, Tex and Belinda, and her family moved to New York City. Soon after, Charlie came home from work to find that her husband had moved out of town and taken their two children with him. Charlie searched for her family for months, but when she found them her children didn't recognize her. Years later, Charlie once again tried to locate her children but their stepmother informed her the children had no desire to meet her.
