While growing up, Mary was haunted by the image of her mother in a red jacket at the age of two, staring unsmilingly at the camera. Mary heard that her mother was diagnosed with pneumonia as a child and her mother was told that Charlie wouldn't make it through the night. Wanting to preserve a memory of her child, Grandma Moore took the photo Mary remembers. Charlie, obviously, lived well into adulthood, but the photograph haunted Mary throughout her childhood.
