Music deeply affected Charlie's mood while she was depressed. Often when she listened to opera she became nostalgic for New York and would tell her daughters exciting stories of her time living there. Other times she would simply show them prints of beautiful artwork she had seen during her time in the city. When she listened to blues, however, the girls knew things were bad and it was best to leave Charlie alone in her room.
