The hotel was built around the pool, which was fed by hot mineral springs. The hotel was the first thing purchased by Edna in her revenge-driven determination to take over the town that had run her off (Chapter Eight). This makes the choice of the hotel and the pool as settings for a number of the novel's key confrontations metaphorically significant to Edna's decisions.
