Who is Artoo and Threepio from The Last Command and what is their importance?

Luke Skywalker on his adventures, Artoo is a squat, chirping astromech that flies missions in space and on earth is more often in the company of Han Solo and the Wookiee Chewbacca. They are both what Dr. Joseph Campbell would call the equivalent of animal familiar in myth based stories.
