Who is Meriaduc from The Lais of Marie de France and what is their importance?

Meriaduc appears in Guigemar. He is a wealthy lord who takes in the lady of the ancient city after her escape. Meriaduc falls in love with her, but she does not return his feelings. He challenges Guigemar to take her from him, which Guigemar does.
