The Chingada is the violated Mother, the mythical Mother who has suffered every abuse. She represents the range of shame and guilt that any Mexican can feel. For the Mexican, it is shameful to be weak or passive; that is why women and homosexual men who play the roles of women are treated more scornfully than others. The only thing that matters is being strong, aggressive, and closed off. The Chingada represents weakness and passivity at their furthest extremes. Even though Mexicans celebrate her spirit, which is tied to the Indian captivity at Spanish hands, they fear to be identified with her, or to experience any of the shame that she experienced.
