Jose Vasconcelos played a pivotal role in modern education by establishing it. Based on his impetus, schools were founded, books were published, and cultural missions established in remote parts of Mexico. His actions were possible because after the Revolution, the Mexican intelligentsia came together in ways that it never had before. Vasconcelos thought of education as an active, living thing and thus his conception of an educational system that encouraged active participation. The common people became interested in their own education and that of their children. Paz's descriptions of Vasconcelos are quite positive. Not only does he agree with Vasconcelos' desire for education, but he also agrees with his ideas for implementing it. Even in Paz's introduction, the reader sees admiration for the founder of modern education: "His [Vasconcelos'] work was brief but fecund, and its essence is still alive (Chapter Seven, page 152). In Paz's eyes, Vasconcelos was vitally important in helping to hoist Mexico toward the Modern Age.
