Paz's closing thought for the book is that perhaps man can begin to dream with his eyes closed (Chapter Nine, page 212). He has talked about the idea that modern man dreams with his eyes open, with reason. He thinks that he is dreaming with his eyes shut, but he is not. The difference between the two types of dreaming of course, is that one is a true dream, and one is merely a misunderstanding of reality. In dreaming with his eyes closed, man is using poetry and intuition rather than reason and fact. That manner of dreaming has sadly misled him. Only by trading reason for intuition will man be able to think clearly and create a proper society.
