All that is left of the colonial world are the emotions that a conquered nation feels: Suspicion, fear, and distrust. The physical trappings and symbols of colonialism have disappeared or have been destroyed. Yet the Mexicans, descended from both the Aztecs and the Spaniards, have retained the mentality of the conquered Aztecs. They cannot move beyond the limitations of the defeated peoples. Those remnants then, are the worst parts that could have been left. Even the physical existence of colonialism is preferable as long as the natives have pride in themselves and a strong sense of self-identity. But the Mexicans, no longer enslaved, have been unable to throw off the mentality of the subjugated.
