Article 3 of the new Constitution mandated that education be secular and socialist. It stated that education must "combat fanaticism and prejudice" and create a rational perception of the world in the young minds (Chapter Seven, page 156). In terms of troubles caused by the Article: It was vaguely worded and did not provide specific ideas on what constituted a good education. Its greater problem lay in the fact that the Mexican economy was built on the idea of private property. Once that the land had been more equally distributed - by the socialist government - Mexico moved into a capitalist society. Education could not be at odds with society. Thus the Article was basically neglected because the people wanted to retain the benefits of the capitalist society that they had recently reached.
