Pulling from the ideas of Jose Gaos, Paz speaks of the physical duality in Mexico. With that, he draws a line between the peninsula and the part Mexico on the continent. Even though they resemble a whole, those two areas of land, are really quite different in terms of philosophy. The peninsula focuses much of its thinking on Spanish tradition, including the elements that give meaning to reality. Thinking on the continent however, is more focused on independence and the Mexican search for identity. In this manner, the seemingly harmless difference in geography translates into large ideological differences.
