Paz asserts that every revolution attempts to restore the order that an oppressing force has distorted. That is quite true in the case of Mexico. Spain had gone in and changed Mexico's indigenous tribes into peasants and serfs, asserting their dominion in a feudal system. The Revolution attempted to throw off those shackles and return to, if not the primitive societies that Mexico was comprised of, to at least the freedom to choose. Mexico wanted to decide her own path, which desire also applied to religion. The Revolution was successful, at least in throwing off the Catholic church restrictions that had been imposed so long ago.
