In the author's parable, Nobody is the son of the Spanish man, Don No One. While Don No One is successful and has many friends, Nobody is alone and disregarded by the world. He is Mexican, the blend of Spanish and Indian. Over the course of his life, he attempts to become Somebody but he never succeeds. The reason that Nobody cannot break the inevitable progression of his existence is because no one around him will acknowledge him. All his actions become meaningless in the void that other people create around him. Unless the people around him break the silence and reach out to him, he will be Nobody forever. And that breaking of course, is impossible because of the thick wall of privacy that Nobody has built around himself. His life is a well-known progression of a meaningless man into the void.
