The Labyrinth of Solitude: Life and Thought in Mexico

How was the Revolution similar to a fiesta? Because of any existing similarity, why do the people cling to that time in history? Can that be considered healthy?

The Revolution was similar to a fiesta because every person was able to take off their mask and live as themselves. Institutions were ignored, anything was acceptable, and life was lived to its fullest. The individual would forget himself in the great roar of the crowd. As Paz wrote, "The Revolution has hardly any ideas. It is an explosion of reality: a return and a communion. . ." (Chapter Six, page 149). Because of that similarity to the fiesta, the people cling to that time in history. They want to relive the Revolution so that they can feel the great feelings and be themselves without fear of repercussion. It can be considered a healthy idea as long as it is done in moderation. When remembering the Revolution, Mexicans build a stronger sense of national identity. But any attempt on their part to attempt to re-live in the spirit of the Revolution on a daily basis would impede the country's ability to move beyond it and onto better things.
