Mexicans view their bodies as an important part of themselves; in fact, they are their bodies. They accept their bodies as natural and live through and with those bodies, often with complete abandon. Yet, because the body is the person, a man is afraid of people's glances. Personified by his body, his individuality is dangerously close to the surface. Another person's look could completely reveal a man's personality, stripping him of the privacy that he works so hard to maintain. Even a look is dangerous, and so a man shuts himself off from his neighbors to an even greater extent.
