According to Alarcon, the liar lies to himself because he is afraid of himself. Although he is trying to deceive others, he lies to himself first, and then to them. Thus the man, who may seem innocent, becomes the problem. Given the Mexican mindset, that idea makes sense. Lying is an acceptable part of human interaction, because every man is trying to protect his privacy (Chapter Two, page 40). A man lies so often that it becomes a core part of his personality. When that happens, he can no longer separate the truth from a lie, and so he lies even to himself.
