Why does Stamford pick blueberries for a couple of children he sees going out to pick berries in a storm?

Stamford is convinced he is to die soon, so he decides to pick blueberries for a couple of kids because he does not want them to get hurt in the storm and because he hopes that this good deed will guarantee his admission into heaven. Stamford believes he will be killed by the lightning, but he is spared.
