Why does Saskia Wilhelm's husband force her into prostitution? Where does Saskia end up?

Saskia Wilhelm is an immigrant from the Netherlands whose ne'er-do-well husband has trouble keeping a job. Saskia's husband forces her into prostitution to pay the bills, first in Philadelphia and then in North Carolina where she finds herself on a plantation owned by Sheriff Skiffington's cousin, Counsel.
