Why does Clara Martin suddenly become convinced that her slave, Ralph, wants to kill her?

Clara has heard rumors of other slaves turning on their owners and she becomes frightened that Ralph, her trusted slave for many years, will suddenly turn on her. Clara refuses to allow Ralph to prepare her meals and she sleeps with knives until her death. Ralph remains with Clara until her death, even after Emancipation.
