Why does Calvin not shake the slaves' hands and what does he wish to do with his own slaves?

Calvin does not shake hands with the slaves because he is afraid they will resent that he owns slaves despite the fact that he is a black man like the slaves. Calvin would like to free his own slaves, but his mother demands he not free his legacy.
