The 'Rita-thing' is the disappearance of a slave named Rita from Robbins' plantation. Rita, who was a surrogate mother to Henry, ran away the night of his party to celebrate his freedom. Rita hid in a crate containing some of Augustus' walking sticks and arrived in New York, where she was freed by an Irish immigrant.
