How does Lou know that Mike is not guilty of raping the three-year-old girl in the novel, The Killer Inside Me?

Lou knows that Mike is not guilty of raping the three-year-old girl because he is the one who committed the crime. He was raping the girl in a straw loft when Mike caught them. For some reason Lou does not go into, Mike decided to take the blame.
