Who kills the Toad in Chapter 16? Why?

Alec grabs Toad by the shirt, drags him off into the woods out of sight, and then Toad’s screaming stops. Alec comes back, says he couldn’t risk Toad doing something crazy, and then goes to the stream to wash himself off. Mark believes he hears Alex sniffle sadly.
