What leads to the separation of Mark and Alec from the others in their group in Chapter 22?

They come to an area of the mountains scorched by the sun flares, and Alec examines his map, the workpad, and the compass. Marc calculates that they can’t be more than five miles from the base. Later on, they hear some singing, and Alec decides to go and check it out. Mark goes along.
