It is a symbol of marriage in China. When a couple marries the candle is lit at both ends. If it remains burning throughout the night, then the couple will stay married. A servant is usually tasked with making sure that it stays lit. However, in the story, Kindo blows the candle out symbolizing her determination to decide her own future.
