Why will the gap between the Northerners and the Southerners not improve in the immediate future?

Unfortunately this situation will not improve in the immediate future because much of the capital raised in the South goes to the Northern engineers, contractors and other skilled workers. The North also supplies equipment and most consumer goods to the agrarian South.
