Why did Twain include the story of Heloise and Abelard in the book, The Innocents Abroad?

France is well known for being one of the most romantic countries in the world, but Twain's descriptions have given no indication that he considers France to be even a tiny bit romantic. Including this story might be Twain's way of returning the reader's focus to France as a place of romance and legend.
