Worthing and Bunbury were invented by Jack and Algernon for several reasons. Ernest Worthing was invented to give Jack an alter-ego so that he could flout the very Victorian mores that were expected of Jack. Bunbury was invented so that Algernon could escape from various odious tasks and assemblies to attend Bunbury who was 'chronically ill' and very often on his deathbed.
