Marriage is a key theme in this play. Victorian society demanded that marriage be an institution that everybody should be a part of, especially women. For women it was necessary to have a stable life of income through her husband. Marriage hence becomes an economic agreement where sex is a commodity. Some of the characters believe in the institution of marriage and some do not.
