The white carpeting Ott installs in the newsroom when the paper begins in order to display the prestige by which he wants the reporters to think of the paper. The carpet is later replaced with more white carpet, but the new carpet remains uncleaned until the paper closes its doors. Over time, the carpet becomes a symbol of the disintegration of the paper.
