Describe symbolism in The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton

There is a lot of water imagery in this book. Whether it is a flood, an ocean, drowning, or floating-water is everywhere. Water seems to represent Lily's struggles to stay above the forces in her life that seem to be drowning her.
