What is the theme in The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien?

Greed is a theme in the novel. All types of men, Dwarves, Elves, wraiths and even a dragon is affected by greed. The ring seems to amplify the forces of greed and dark obsession. Bilbo must always be on guard from himself when he slips it on.
