Consider the elements, needs, and desires that drive the Gollum in The Hobbit. What are these things?

Gollum is a small, slimy creature who lives in the middle of a lake in a deep, dark cave in the Misty Mountains. Gollum is a tortured soul who has fallen under the ring's power past the point of no return. Gollum wants his ring back and aches for it like an addiction. He will do anything to get it back. Bilbo seems to rekindle his old self, Sméagol (or Trahald), and there is always a personality conflict going on between who he was and who the ring made him.
