How do Monkey Pants and Dodo communicate in the novel, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store?

Though Monkey Pants has difficulty communicating because of his condition, he forges an immediate friendship with Dodo and works tirelessly with him to develop a form of sign language so that they can speak to one another.
