Why does Eleanor steal her car from her sister in the novel, The Haunting of Hill House?

Eleanor is part owner of the car she shares with her sister, but her sister will not allow her to take it to Hill House. Eleanor, in a rare moment of defiance, takes the car anyway, sneaking away from the house before dawn.
