Who is Maverick Carter from The Hate You Give?

Maverick Carter is Starr's father. He was a member of the King Lords until he took the rap for King over a weapons charge and went to prison for three years. Carter was in prison from the time Starr was three until she was six. Maverick was permitted to leave the gang because he covered for King. He now operates a corner store in Garden Heights and tries to help the community's youth stay out of trouble.
