In Chapter Eleven, Kenya tells Starr that it is her obligation to speak out about what happened to Khalil, not just for his sake, but for the sake of the whole neighborhood, as it could have happened to any one of them. Kenya also taps into Starr's insecurities about her split identities to make her feel guilty, asserting that “if [Khalil] was one if your private school friends, you'd be all on TV, defending him” [198]. Starr knows this is not entirely true, but it makes her feel bad anyway, and further inspires her to act. She is also likely inspired by Mr. Lewis' bravery in coming out against King to the reporters, something that is unheard of in Garden Heights.
