Describe Starr's basketball friends. How and why does their relationship change over the course of the story?

Maya is a friend of Starr's who also attends Williamson and plays basketball. She lives in Riverton Hills down the street from Starr's uncle Carlos. Maya is more sensitive to what Starr is going through, and reminds her that Hailey once made a racist comment to her as well, about her Chinese heritage. Despite a little friction, they remain friends throughout the novel.

Hailey is also one of Starr's friends (questionable). As the novel progresses, it becomes clear that Hailey is racist, and not a good friend. The first indication of this is when Starr notes that Hailey stopped following her Tumblr blog after Starr posted a photograph of Emmett Till. Hailey later makes a joke about Starr liking fried chicken, and then defends Officer Cruise after seeing the news report about the shooting at Maya's house. This is ultimately the last straw for Starr, who fails to respond to Hailey's overtures at making up at the end of the novel, deleting her number instead.
