Raju has the personality of a leech. This becomes apparent because of the way Raju involves himself in the education of the children. Raju asks the school master to teach at the temple so he can encourage the education of the children but mainly this gives him a way to stay involved in the lives of the villagers without having to be emotionally invested in them. As long as he's involved in their lives, he believes the villagers will continue to take care of him but by keeping an emotional distance, he doesn't have to interact too much with them.
