How did Mr. Jingles eat a portion of a sandwich that Brutal gave him the first night that the mouse showed up?

When Brutus gave Mr. Jingles a piece of a sandwich, the mouse sniffed his way around it and then sat in front of it like a dog doing a trick. The mouse then grabbed the sandwich and deliberately and pulled apart the bread to get the meat.
