According to Theroux, the Vietnamese were a naturally generous people. But the focus on privileges was largely a vestige of the war, during which visitors expected to be given VIP treatment. The Vietnamese viewed each foreigner as a potential publicist who would then go home and let people know how wonderful the country was.
