Theroux was astounded at the vast numbers of poor people sleeping in the streets without so much as a blanket. He was convinced that the overpopulation of the country was the primary issue holding the nation back. He pointed out that India was the largest rice-grower in the world, but had to import rice in order to feed the multitudes. Ultimately, Theroux was convinced that India was doomed to failure unless overpopulation ceased to be an issue.
