What did Theroux find disturbing about Osaka?

Theroux was unnerved by the sight of so many Osaka residents wearing masks to protect themselves from the city's notoriously polluted air. In addition, the buildings were gray, and the all residents (without exception) waited patiently at walk signals before crossing the street. In Theroux's mind, a society in which nobody jaywalked was one in which nobody produced art.
