How did Westerners and Japanese react to the suicide of the Japanese writer, Yukio Mishima?

While Westerners were generally appalled at the suicide of Mishima, the Japanese appeared to be happy he had killed himself. They tended to view Mishima with suspicion because of what they believed were his imperialist tendencies. They also believed he had committed suicide because of his belief in reincarnation.
