Gopal obviously prided himself of his vast knowledge of the city of Jaipur, but as Theroux consulted his guidebook, it became obvious that Gopal was profoundly ignorant of the architecture and history of the city. By making Theroux leave behind his guidebook, Gopal hoped to get away with his act by making it impossible for Theroux to check the facts.
