What makes Gilly change her mind and comb her hair for her first day of school?

Gilly is in for a surprise when she thinks she'll shock her new foster mother by coming down for school with her hair a mess. Instead the woman acts as though everything is perfectly normal, and that is so frustrating to Gilly that she goes upstairs and fixes her hair as nicely as she can.
