Nick is eventually invited to one of these parties, but not by Gatsby himself; instead, Gatsby's chauffeur brings an invitation to Nick's door. The guests drink and gossip about Gatsby and his past. They find the enigma of Gatsby interesting but do not really care about the person. They are there for the extravagant party.
